Uimin-gong Shrine

Uimin-gong Shrine is a shrine located on Jijeong-ro in Jijeong-myeon, Wonju, Gangwon State. The shrine was built in 1965, but was destroyed by fire twice. It was rebuilt in 1997 and is managed by the Cheongju-gong branch clan association of the Yeonan Kim clan.

Kim Je-nam (1562–1613) was a civil official and a maternal relative of the royal family during the middle Joseon period. He was the father-in-law of King Seonjo, and Queen Inmok, Seonjo’s second queen consort, was his second daughter. In 1613, he was sentenced to death by poison on suspicion of attempting to have Prince Yeongchang, the son of Queen Inmok, enthroned. His three sons also received the same sentence and were killed, resulting in the destruction of his family. In 1616, when Queen Inmok was deposed, he was subjected to posthumous mutilation. However, he was rehabilitated after King Injo’s Restoration in 1623 and was later posthumously appointed Chief State Councillor.
