Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Address: Gangwon State, Gangneung-si, Sacheon-myeon, Mino-gil 1

Forests are where culture and history began alongside human life, and forests are our precious resource, providing not only timber but also clear water, clean air, and a beautiful natural environment. In the spring of 2000, the largest forest fire since the founding of the nation occurred along the east coast. A total of 23,794 ha of dense forest, stretching from Goseong in Gangwon State to Uljin in Gyeongsangbuk-do, was reduced to ashes. Countless plants and animals, as well as many residents, suffered property damage and loss of life, and lost their homes and livelihoods. Forest fires are not merely forest damage but a terrifying disaster that destroys natural ecosystems and requires decades of effort to restore. Having experienced the east coast forest fire, and in order to promote the importance of forests and protect the beautiful land of mountains and rivers painstakingly created through the forestation and greening project from forest fires—most of which are caused by human error—the Forest Love Promotion Hall was established in February 2006.
