Taebaek Cultural Center

Taebaek Cultural Center, which advocates “a large and bright cultural center where culture flows like spring water,” was established in 1984. Earlier, Taebaek City was inaugurated in 1981, and the Cultural Center has long worked to establish the origins of local place names. In addition, since 1990, it has been responsible for the Taebaeksan Cheonje, a traditional folk cultural ceremony. Since 2022, it has been developing the ceremony into a national Cheonje in which all Koreans can participate by introducing a public procession involving people from across the country and adding a mountaintop concert at Cheonj e Dan Square. It is continuing to cultivate the ceremony as one that people can experience and enjoy together. In 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected the Taebaeksan Cheonje as one of the 100 Hidden Cultural Attractions of Korea. Taebaek Cultural Center also operates cultural classes such as samulnori and serves as a gathering place for local residents. Since constructing its facility at the current site in 1996, it has further improved convenience for residents through remodeling, including the installation of an elevator in the four-story building in 2024. Taebaek Cultural Center continues to work passionately today to promote the revitalization of local culture.
