Former Cheorwon First Church

강원특별자치도 철원군 철원읍 금강산로 319

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The former Cheorwon First Church was begun in 1936 and completed in 1937. A three-story building with one basement level, it was a representative church in the Cheorwon area, with approximately 500 members at the time. It was also the headquarters of the independence movement that sparked the first protest in Gangwon-do. Later, during the Korean War, Christian youths and students carried out an anti-communist struggle centered around Cheorwon Methodist Church under communist rule. During the war, under the North Korean regime, the church was also used as a barracks and a ward by the Korean People's Army, while its basement was used as a site where civilians and anti-communist fighters were brutally tortured. Located on a hill beside the road not far from the Workers' Party Headquarters, most of the church was destroyed during the Korean War, leaving only traces behind.
