Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hwang Young-cho Memorial Park was established in Chogok-ri, his hometown, to commemorate Hwang Young-cho, a Samcheok native who won the marathon at the 1992 25th Barcelona Olympic Games. The memorial park was created to honor the process of Hwang Young-cho’s triumph over adversity and the excitement of his victory, while inspiring courage and dreams in young people. It includes a memorial hall and memorial tower, among other facilities. The memorial hall was built with a total floor area of 987 ㎡, extending from one basement level to three above-ground floors. The park offers a panoramic view of Chogok-ri and features a statue of Hwang Young-cho, a winners’ podium, and his birth home. A marathon is held annually in Samcheok to commemorate his achievement. The park can be toured in about 20 minutes, making it suitable as a short sightseeing course. It is located along a two-lane road leading from Donghae-daero down to Chogok Village, making it a pleasant place for a drive as well. Admission to the memorial hall is free. The first-floor First Exhibition Room displays various photographs introducing Hwang Young-cho’s growth and training process leading up to his Olympic victory. The Second Exhibition Room contains commemorative photographs from the time of his Olympic victory, as well as photographs, items, and videos from various marathon competitions he participated in. The second floor is a souvenir shop displaying Olympic posters from past Games, and the third floor is a lounge.
