Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
Maewoldae Falls is located about 1 km east of the summit of Maewoldae on Bogyegsan Mountain in Cheorwon-gun. It is one of Cheorwon’s Nine Scenic Views and one of the three major waterfalls in Cheorwon. The valley stretching from Cheongseokgol to Maewoldae is famous as a summer resort. Maewoldae was named after the cliff by Maewoldang Kim Si-seup (1435–1493), who retired to this area after opposing the dethronement of King Danjong during the Joseon Dynasty and later lived in seclusion here. Maewoldae Falls was likewise named after Kim Si-seup’s pen name, and is also known by another name, Seonam Falls.
