Munchijae Pass

Munchijae Pass is an old mountain pass road that can be found along Jeongseon National Route 424. Route 424, which begins in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do, has picturesque scenery hidden throughout its endless mountain passes. Munchijae Pass is considered one of Korea’s representative mountain pass roads, along with Odojae in Hamyang, Malti Pass in Boeun, and the 12 Hairpin Bends of Heuksando. Munchijae Pass was given its name because it resembles a gate surrounded by high mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, including Goyangsan, Gakhwisan, and Gommokijae. The road is approximately 1.5 km long and takes a dramatic S-shape throughout, making it known as a longboarding mecca. The World Longboard Downhill Championships were held here in 2017 and 2018. At the summit of Munchijae Pass, 732 meters above sea level, is the Munchijae Observatory. The view of Munchijae Pass from here offers a fantastic vista with an almost exotic beauty. Located in a remote area, the pass is rarely visited and has no artificial lighting, making it renowned as a popular spot for photographing constellations and car light trails at night. Famous photographers from across the country continue to visit this place.
