Lee Hyo-seok's Birthplace

강원특별자치도 평창군 봉평면 이효석길 33-11

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Lee Hyo-seok is a representative novelist of modern Korean history. His pen name was 'Gasan', and in 1936 he published 'When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom', one of the masterpieces of Korean short fiction. In Pyeongchang-gun, the place where Lee Hyo-seok was born and raised and the setting of 'When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom', his thatched-roof birthplace was restored in 2007 about 600 meters downhill from the original site within Lee Hyo-seok Village, based on the historical verification of local elders. The original house had lost its original form, and the restoration was based on historical research to vividly convey the lifestyle of that era.
