Gimpo Jangneung (Tomb of King Wonjong and Queen Inheon) [UNESCO World Heritage]

경기도 김포시 장릉로 79 (풍무동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jangneung is the tomb of King Wonjong, the biological father of the 16th king of Joseon, King Injo (1623–1649), and his wife, Queen Inheon of the Gu clan. Jangneung is in the form of a double tomb (ssangneung) with two burial mounds placed side by side within a single curved wall. When viewed from the front, the left (west) mound is that of King Wonjong, and the right (east) mound is that of Queen Inheon. The scale and specifications of the tomb seem to reflect the typical style of the mid-Joseon period. Below the tomb is a ritual house (jaesil) used for ancestral rites, a building where the 21st king, Yeongjo, and the 22nd king, Jeongjo, visited annually to perform ceremonies. The area around the tomb is landscaped like a park.
