Yeongwolam (Icheon)

경기도 이천시 경충대로2709번길 388 (관고동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located on the slope of Seolbongsan Mountain, overlooking the city of Icheon, Yeongwolam Temple is said to have been founded by Master Uisang (625–702) during the reign of King Munmu of Silla, originally named 'Bukaksa' (北岳寺) with the mountain also called 'Bukak' (北岳). However, there is no substantive evidence to support this, making it difficult to verify the truth.

At Yeongwolam Temple, the Rock-carved Standing Buddha of Yeongwolam Temple, designated as Treasure No. 822, is estimated to have been created in the mid-Goryeo period. The Stone Halo and Lotus Pedestal, designated as Icheon City Local Heritage No. 3, are estimated to date from the late Unified Silla to early Goryeo period. From this, it can be inferred that Yeongwolam Temple was established between the late Silla and early Goryeo periods and that the temple flourished considerably from the late Silla through the Goryeo period.
