Pungdo

Pungdo, a small island in the West Sea located 24km from Daebudo, is famous for its abundance of beautiful wildflowers such as Adonis amurensis, Hepatica asiatica, Korean anemone, and Isopyrum raddeanum. Due to the many maple trees, it was written as Pungdo (楓島) using the character for maple (楓) until the late Joseon period. However, because there is no farmland and the seafood in the fishing grounds around the island is not abundant, the island's name was changed to Pungdo (豊島) using the character for abundance (豊). Pungdo offers various attractions, including Dongmujae, a sky path that meets the sky; the secret garden of Pungdo, a paradise of wildflowers; a ginkgo tree over 500 years old; and Cheongyeopgol Beach, where the bodies of Qing soldiers washed ashore during the Battle of Pungdo.
