인천광역시 옹진군 영흥면 영흥로722번길 146

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Tongilsa Temple was founded in 1983 by the Buddhist nun Choi Seon-gyu to commemorate the spirit of her husband, who died in the Korean War. Her husband, Seo Hyeong-seok, was a student soldier during the retreat on January 4, 1961. He fought against a large Chinese force on the western front with a single platoon. After all his comrades were killed, he is said to have taken his own life heroically. Later, the widowed nun built this temple on Guksabong Peak to resolve her grief and continues to pray for the unification of the homeland.
